Coffee is the second-most traded commodity in the developing world, and is Ethiopia’s primary export. It is also Ethiopia’s strongest chance for national financial stability. Ethiopia is the 8th poorest nation in the world and yet is home to over 10,000 varieties of coffee. Colombia has five. Like wine, each coffee variety produces a different flavor—but imagine if wine makers in France were staffed by people who made $1.00/day and sold their wine for .50 cents/bottle. Raising the awareness of Ethiopia as being a special place for coffee in the world will help raise coffee export earnings. At 600 million pounds exported per year, every 10-cent increase in average price paid will yield an additional sixty million dollars in export earnings for Ethiopia. Coffee Story: Ethiopia will broaden the global view on Ethiopia as the country emerges from its legacy of famine and terror as a participant in the world market. |
